Congratulations Concord Spiders: 2006 3A State Champions!

Concord defeated Western Alamance 35-28 in overtime to win the State 3A Championship. It is the second title for the Spiders in 3 seasons.

Concord opened the scoring with a Mike Moore 5 yard touchdown run. Western Alamance would answer after a blocked punt to tie the score at 7-7 on a Donald Britt 25 yard touchdown pass. Concord would answer with a strong drive capped by Jimmy Drye's 28 yard touchdown reception. On the ensuing Warrior possession Dee Bost stepped in front of Donald Britt's pass and returned it for a touchdown. The Spiders took a 21-7 halftime lead.

Concord seemingly took control of the game late in the 3rd quarter. Fullback Mike Moore rumbled 52 yards for a touchdown to put the Spiders up 28-7. But the Warriors were not ready to concede their third straight Championship game. The Warrior offense had averaged just under 40 points a game this season, and in the 4th quarter they showed why. The Warriors put together two impressive drives to get to 28-21. Then the Warriors executed a perfect onside kick to get the ball back with just over a minute remaining. Donald Britt found Kenneth Lindsey for a 36 yard touchdown to tie the game at 28-28. On the ensuing kickoff WR Lance Lewis was stripped of the ball while struggling for extra yardage. That setup a potential game winning 27 yard field goal for the Warriors. Head Coach E.Z. Smith used two consecutive timeouts to try to ice Warrior kicker Adam Willetts. With the game and the 3A crown on the line Willetts kick missed left.

In overtime the Spiders went on offense first. On the first play Dee Bost ran a bootleg around the right side for the go-ahead touchdown. Chad Myers extra point was good putting the Spiders up 35-28. Then the Warriors would get their turn. On the very first play linebacker Matt Beecher interecpted a Donald Britt pass, sealing the win for the Spiders.

Just as they have done all through the playoffs several Concord players gave Head Coach E.Z. Smith and Associate Head Coach Clement Fleming a shower with the water coolers to celebrate.

Mike Moore was named the offensive MVP for the game, he led the Spiders with 97 yards and 2 touchdowns. Linebacker Calvin Hillie was named Defensive MVP, he led the Spiders with 9 tackles. QB/CB Dee Bost was named MVP for the game after going 9-18 with 1 touchdown and an interception return for a touchdown.

The Spiders started 0-3 this season and won 13 in a row! Thanks for an exciting season!
