Huskies nip Spiders

Hunter Huss defeated Concord 19-14 in a hard fought contest.

Read MoreHuss wasted little time scoring on their second offensive play on quarterback Marshall Williams' 80 yard touchdown run. Later in the 1st quarter Concord tied the game when Denzel Phillips rambled 45 yards for a touchdown.

Defense and turnovers were the theme in the second quarter. There were several exchanges after 3 and out possessions. Huss was in scoring position but the Spider defense forced a fumble near the goalline. Just before halftime Williams added a short touchtown to put the Huskies up 13-7 at the break.

Concord received the kickoff to start the second half but were unable to control the ball. Huss took over near the Concord 20 yard line but the Spider defense came up with another turnover. Later in the 3rd Concord quarterback Jacquise Moore found Elijah Bost over the middle for a 90 yard touchdown pass. Brandon Barnhardt added the extra point to put the Spiders ahead 14-13. Huss moved down the field again but were once again denied points as Spider defensive back Ryan Goodman blocked a 30 yard field goal attempt.

Early in the 4th Concord fumbled the pitch on an option run. Huss took advantage as Williams found his receiver on a jump ball in the endzone. Concord stopped the 2 point conversion attempt.

On the ensuing kickoff the Concord returner ran into his own man and fumbled. Concord's defense held and stopped the Huskies on a 4th down run. After a Concord punt the defense stopped another Huskie 4th down run to setup one more chance for the Spiders. Senior quarterback Sean Willix had some success leading the Spiders down the field but the Huskies stopped the Spiders on a 4th down pass.

With Concord out of time outs and the game seemingly over Huss fumbled the ball one more time. Concord drove to the Huss 35 yard line but were unable to score.

Jacquise Moore took most of the snaps at quarterback finishing 7-9 with 149 yards. Denzel Phillips led the Spiders with 57 yards rushing. Elijah Bost led Concord with 112 yards receiving.

Jalen Brown paced the Spider defense with 11 tackles. Bradley Phillips, Jacquise Moore, and Taj Williams each recovered a fumble.

Concord has the open date next week, the Spiders return to action September 25 hosting the Northwest Cabarrus Trojans.

Mustangs run past Spiders

East Rowan defeated Concord 30-0 Friday night.

Concord took the opening kickoff, then drove to the East Rowan 20 yard line before the drive was stopped due to a botched exchange. East Rowan took over on downs then methodically drove the length of the field behind a powerful running game. The drive was capped by a short touchdown pass by Mustang quarterback Jamey Blalock. Later the Mustangs would add a safety when quarterback Jacquise Moore struggled to corral a high snap near his own goal line.

The Mustangs would continue to ride the power run game adding a short Blalock touchdown run to push the lead to 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter provided more of the same. Concord's offense struggled and the Mustangs ran the ball at will. Just before halftime East Rowan added a 40 yard touchdown pass after a Spider turnover. East took a 23-0 lead into halftime.

Concord's defense held to start the second half, then the Spiders drove to midfield but were stopped on a key 4th down play. East would cap the scoring with a short Blalock run to put East up 30-0.

Concord had some success moving the ball but struggled to do so on a consistant basis. Dominique Posey and Jacquise Moore paced the Spiders with 53 and 52 yards rushing respectively.

The defense was lead by Jalen Brown's 11 tackles. Terrence Highsmith added a fumble recovery.

The victory was East's first win over the Spiders since 1979.

Concord will look to rebound at Hunter Huss next Friday.

Yellow Jackets top Spiders

Lexington defeated Concord 21-15 Friday night at Robert C. Bailey Stadium. The Spiders overcame a 15-0 Lexington halftime lead to tie the game in the 4th but Lexington added the deciding touchdown with 5 minutes remaining.

After a few punts Lexington got on the board with a Quandarious Crump 27 yard touchdown run. Early in the second quarter Lexington struck again as Trae Sanders added a 22 yard touchdown run, the Yellow Jackets added a 2 point conversion run to stretch their lead to 15-0. Lexington would drive again but the Spider defense recovered a Yellow Jacket fumble to end the drive. Concord was unable to capitalize on the fumble. Later Lexington would miss a 27 yard field goal attempt. Jason Willix picked off an Al Challenger pass to end another yellow Jacket drive.

Spider wide receiver Jacquise Moore took over at quarterback to start the game. However the Spiders offense would still struggle against a solid Lexington defense. The Spiders ended the first half with 18 yards and one first down.

In the second half the Spiders dialed up the intensity. Defensive back Mark O'Brien picked off an Al Challenger pass and returned it into Lexington territory but the drive stalled. On the next Lexington drive the Spider defense held the Jackets after 3 consecutive losses.

Jacquise Moore provided the spark the Spiders needed on a spectacular 91 yard touchdown run. Moore scrambled, eluded one Lexington player and ran untouched the rest of the way. Concord's defense held again and the Lexington punter was tackled at his own 15 after a bad snap.

Lexington's defense held the Spiders to a 4th down and 4 to go. Spider quarterback Jordan Havinga was able to draw an offsides penalty to continue the drive. Lexington buckled down again forcing a Brandon Barnhardt field goal attempt. After a botched snap holder Ryan Goodman scooped the ball up and scrambled to his left throwing a pass back toward the right pylon. Jacquise Moore outjumped two Lexington defenders to make the catch and score. Concord would add a two point conversion pass form Jordan Havinga to DeAndre Schoolfield to tie the game.

The deciding play came with about 5 minutes remaining. Al Challenger found Reco Hairston on a long pass play. Hairston fumbled near the goal line but Lexington tailback Duke Horton recovered and scored. The extra point was no good. Concord could not answer and Lexington put the game away with a 4th down conversion.

Jalen Brown led all defenders with 8 tackles. Wesley Scott had 3 tackles for a loss. Mark O'Brien and Jason Willix added interceptions.

Jaquise Moore led the Spiders with 89 yards rushing and a touchdown reception.

Mavericks top Spiders in opener

Marvin Ridge defeated Concord 30-7 Friday night at Robert C. Bailey Stadium.

After a few punts back and forth Marvin Ridge drove deep into Spider territory but would have to settle for a 27 yard field goal. Later after a Concord fumble Maverick quarterback Tyler Chadwick found Ryan Skibba in the corner of the endzone to put the Mavericks up 10-0. Later in the second quarter Chadwick would throw another touchdown pass(30 yard) to increase the Maverick lead to 17 points. Jacquise Moore returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards into Maverick territory but the drive would end after a Jordan Havinga interception. The Spider defense held and the Mavericks led 17-0.

The Spider's offensive woes would continue in the second half. After the Spiders defense forced a Maverick punt on their first drive of the second half Matt Chilton picked off a Havinga pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. In the 4th quarter the Mavericks would add another touchdown on a 15 yard run by tailback Kolly Ogar. On the next possession the Spiders avoided the shutout when Jordan Havinga found Jacquise Moore for a 22 yard touchdown. Brandon Barnhardt added the extra point.

The Spiders played Jordan Havinga and Ryan Goodman at quarterback. Havinga finished 4-10 with one touchdown and 2 interceptions. Goodman finished 0-1 with an interception. Tailback Denzel Phillips led the Spider rushing attack with 76 yards on 9 carries. Jacquise Moore led the receivers with 2 receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown.

The defense was paced by linebacker Bradley Phillips' 9 tackles. Brandon Rivers recovered a Maverick fumble.

The game was the first for new Head Coach Glen Padgett. Coach Padgett returned to Concord after former Head Coach E.Z. Smith resigned earlier this year. The Spiders will return to action next Friday as they host Lexington at Robert C. Bailey Stadium. Come out and support Coach Padgett and the Spiders!
